Apples are in abundance at this time of year, so it's a brilliant excuse to make apple pie and apple crumble (apple crisp if you're from across the Atlantic).
You just can't beat a traditional crumble in the autumn; lovely crunchy crumble topping, sweet/sour apple filling, a hint of cinnamon and a great big dollop of custard. Yum! It also brings back memories of childhood. My mum makes a mean crumble, usually with fruit my dad has grown. Making apple crumble is incredibly easy. You just need to make sure you have the quantities to your preference. I personally prefer a high crumble to apple ratio, especially if I am having custard. I have no time for those crumbles that are fruit with a sprinkle of crumble on top! You need enough crumble on top to be almost cakey when some of the fruit juices soak through.
Top Tips for making Traditional Apple Crumble
- You really do need to use cooking apples, like Bramleys. A crumble should have tart fruit and if you use eating apples, it will be overwhelmingly sweet.
- When rubbing the crumble ingredients together, dont worry too much about getting it down to a fine crumb, a little lumpy is fine.
- When cooking the apples down, don't let it go to mush. You want some of the apple to break down, but plenty of chunks left, or it won't be pleasant to eat.

For the filling
- 5 cooking apples
- 100ml water
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
For the crumble
- 200g plain flour
- 100g caster sugar
- 140g butter
- 60g oats

How to cook Traditional Apple Crumble
- Pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees (180 fan, gas mark 4).
- Peel the apples and chop them into chunks. It really doesn't matter how big or small the chunks are. In fact it doesn't matter if they are all different sizes!
- Heat the water and brown sugar on medium heat in a large saucepan until the sugar dissolves and then add the apple chunks and the cinnamon.
- Leave on the heat until some of the chunks have started to dissolve. Don't stir too much or it will turn to mush.
- Pour the apple mixture into a medium casserole dish.
- Cut the butter into small chunks.
- Put all the crumble ingredients in a large mixing bowl and rub together with your fingers until it feels a bit like lumpy breadcrumbs.
- Pour the topping over the apple and then spread out with a fork or a spoon.
- Pop in the oven for 25 minutes, or until the crumble topping is golden brown.
NOTES:
Use cooking apples, like Bramleys. Eating apples, will be too weet.
