A plate with slow cooked beef, roast potatoes and stufffing
I absolutely love this slow-cooked beef. Now that buying a decent cut of beef for roasting is so expensive, this is the best way I have found to have beef for Sunday dinner. Slow-cooked in red wine, with onion and carrots, it's a really easy way to cook cheaper cuts of beef. It also really reminds me of the food my nana would serve up when we went to visit her- simple, hearty and comforting.

Top Tips

  • Don't use any good quality drinking red wine to make this recipe. I tend to use the bottles that come with supermarket meal deals.
  • Use classic cuts of 'cheap' beef such as stewing steak, beef rib trim or shin for example.
  • I use carrots and onions and serve with accompaniments, but you can add more vegetables, or pulses if you want to make it a whole meal in one.
